Technical Staff

Emergency Veterinarian

Tufts VETS is recruiting an emergency veterinarian to join our Level I VECCS certified hospital. The position offers the opportunity to provide care to a diverse array of inpatients across multiple specialties. Our emergency doctors participate in a rotation of shifts including daytime emergency receiving, daytime inpatient management, mid-day (‘swing’) emergency receiving and overnight shifts. About the Position: We are seeking a fulltime Urgent Care Veterinary Technician (certified preferred). The Urgent Care and ECC services collaborate and communicate with one another in determining when cases need to be transferred from one to the other depending on the patient’s required care.

  • Assists the urgent care veterinarian with cases from triage to discharge
  • Skilled at triage
  • Comfortable with patient discharges, reviewing orders and medications with clients
  • Comfortable with digital medical records and treatment orders
  • Excellent client communication skills with willingness to work with ER/ECC technicians and veterinarians during the transfer process, when needed

Veterinary Assistant Urgent Care - Full-Time

About the Position: We are seeking fulltime Veterinary Assistants to join our Urgent Care team.

  • Provides compassionate care to all patients and clients.
  • Conducts oneself in a confident and professional manner even when stressed and/or focused on individual tasks.
  • Assists Veterinary Technicians with patient treatments, procedures, and triages.
  • Assists the Urgent Care Doctors with patient examinations, treatments, procedures and discharges.
  • Takes direction from the Supervisor, Urgent Care Technician, or Urgent Care Doctor regarding prioritizing responsibilities during the shift.
  • Assists with general department husbandry and stocking.
  • Knows how to use basic functions of digital medical record system: StringSoft.
  • Can collect a basic patient history.
  • Obtain and document patient’s vitals (TPRW).
  • Can effectively and safely restrain patients for blood draws, catheter placement, procedures, treatments, or general examinations.
  • Understands the importance of a clean and orderly facility, does not hesitate to clean, or organize as part of a normal job duty.

Emergency & Critical Care Credentialed Technician Supervisor

Position Overview:

The ECC Technician Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the ECC & Urgent Care departments. This position will be a working supervisor; with time both on and off the floor. Working on the floor performing all Technician responsibilities, modeling best practices in client/patient interactions with team members, observing and coaching team members on their clinical skills, knowledge, and patient care, ensuring efficient workflows and high standard of patient care being followed, and building good working interpersonal relationships between ECC and Urgent Care with all other services. The ECC Technician Supervisor also plays a vital role in building and maintaining a healthy culture throughout the hospital. This position supports and reports to the Clinical Services Manager.

This position requires someone who is organized, confident, and can maintain professionalism in tense situations, is invested in the success of the ECC and Urgent Care departments as well as the hospital, leads effectively and thoughtfully, is a champion through change, and possesses the ability to solve complex problems. A high level of emotional intelligence is key to succeed in this role. The ECC Technician Supervisor must be committed to controlling their emotions in a high stress environment and navigating interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically. One must have the ability to navigate difficult conversations while being aware of body language, tone, and words to ensure an approachable and optimistic interaction. This includes deescalating employee conflict and gossip in a constructive and productive way.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform all essential duties and tasks required of an ER/ICU/Urgent Care Veterinary Technician.
  • Motivate, inspire, and empower team members.
  • Ensure optimal patient care by providing clear expectations and direction for team members.
  • Provide team members with coaching and training that are in line with hospital expectations.
  • Monitor and give frequent feedback to team members to ensure they deliver exceptional client and patient nursing care.
  • Conducts performance evaluations with the Clinical Services Managers support.
  • Develop departmental policies and procedures.
  • Provide conflict resolution both internally and externally.
  • Maintains the schedule for ECC and Urgent Care that provides appropriate and adequate coverage for both services.
  • Participates and oversees the ECC on-call schedule for staffing needs such as callouts and open shift coverage, and any shift concerns.
  • Participate in callout and open shift coverage.
  • Work required shift schedule including weekends and holiday coverage.
  • Assist with disciplinary actions when necessary/appropriate (with management approval).
  • Interview applicants for positions within the ECC and Urgent Care departments.
  • Assists and oversees with onboarding and training of new hires within the ECC and Urgent Care departments.
  • Facilitates and promotes individual growth and development goals/plans for team members within the ECC and Urgent Care services.
  • Assist in the resolution of problems/issues between team members with tact and professionalism.
  • Act as an advocate for the ECC and Urgent Care services.
  • Meet regularly with the Clinical Services Manager and Hospital Director of Operations.
  • Encourage collaboration and build strong inter-departmental relationships.
  • Maintain positive rapport between all hospital team members and clients.
  • Communicate openly, effectively, and regularly with all management/supervisors and specialists.
  • Delegate responsibilities including projects to the ECC Lead Technicians.
  • Meet regularly with the ECC Lead Technicians and Shift Coordinators.
  • Assists the Clinical Services Manager with Payroll time clock review, pay adjustments, and approvals.

Education and Licensure Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Degree in Veterinary Technology and/or Animal Science preferred
  • Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT)
  • Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) in Emergency & Critical Care desirable

Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum of 2 years of leadership or supervisory experience

ICU Veterinary Technicians - Day & Overnight

Tufts V.E.T.S. is a multispecialty hospital providing level 1 VECCS certified emergency and critical care to New England. We are an affiliate of the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, at Tufts University, providing a unique environment that integrates learning into a busy private practice setting. About the Position: We are seeking full-time Veterinary Technicians (certified preferred) to join our day & overnight ICU teams within the Emergency and Critical Care services.

  • Proficient with following and performing patient treatments
  • Comfortable with digital medical records and treatment orders
  • Can safely restrain patients
  • Has excellent knowledge of common disease processes and pharmacology
  • Proficient with time management and punctuality
  • Proficient with medical calculations
  • Comfortable with setting up and monitoring CRI’s
  • Proficient with venipuncture and IVC placement
  • Proficient with using various in-house equipment such as NOVA, Catalyst, Procyte, Coag and submitting various lab samples to external labs
  • Can place central lines, NG tubes, and u-caths
  • Comfortable with transfusions and blood typing
  • Assists ECC doctors with procedures
  • Proficient at patient positioning and taking digital radiographs
  • Can setup, monitor, interpret, and maintain patient monitoring equipment (ECG, SpO2, CO2, NIBP)
  • Comfortable with use and interpretation of telemetry system
  • Proficient with patient triage, procedure workups, admitting & rounding patients, and discharges
  • Comfortable with common sedating protocols, monitoring patients pre-op, intra-op, and during recovery of sedation
  • Can setup, maintain, and troubleshoot multiparameter monitors (SpO2, CO2, ECG, NIBP), Doppler, and other common emergency equipment (O2 cage, ventilator)
  • Assists with providing general husbandry and inventory for ECC patients and service

Shift: Day: 7am to 7pm fulltime (36 hour) benefit position within the ECC services including weekend and holiday coverage. Days TBD.

Personal Requirements:

  • Minimum of 18 years old
  • Minimum 3 years working as a veterinary technician
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in an emergency and/or specialty hospital preferred
  • Graduate from an accredited AVMA program preferred
  • CVT, LVT, RVT, and/or VTS preferred
